What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy based in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), in which dried plant materials, called "moxa", are burned at specific points on the body. It aims to relieve chills from the body and help to naturally rebalance the person's life energy, called "Qi". It is traditionally used in acupuncture and aims to warm up the body and remove stagnation to help the body restore optimal health.

Chinese herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions such as skin problems like psoriasis, eczema and acne, hormonal problems like PMS (premenstrual syndrome), fertility and menopause, digestive and respiratory problems, allergic diseases (e.g. hay fever) and autoimmune diseases. Many diseases, especially in their chronic forms or difficult and strange problems, present modern medicine with great difficulties, while Chinese herbal medicine can achieve remarkable results.

Although Chinese herbal medicine is very effective in treating diseases, not every TCM therapy is competent in prescribing it. If prescriptions are not precise enough, they often do not achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Ms. Yang has specialized in herbal medicine research for almost 20 years. Many successful experiences have been made to help patients to solve their complaints with the help of Chinese herbal medicine.

How does moxibustion work?

Moxibustion is the burning of an herb called mugwort. The curative moxibustion treatment begins after the doctor has fully examined the patient's body and identified the areas of illness. Once the mugwort has begun to burn, the doctor either places the grain-type moxa directly on the patient's skin for direct healing or uses a moxa roller slightly over the skin for indirect healing. These treatments help to remove both moisture and cold from the body.

Does moxibustion have side effects?

In the TCM 5 Balance Clinic only moxa sticks of good quality are used. If the moxa stick burns, the temperature is not too high. In general, it is very safe to perform moxibustion in our clinic. However, the skin of very few people is very sensitive, so that scalding can occur. Therefore, you should inform us immediately if the moxa stick is felt to be too hot so that we can remove it. However, the probability of scalding is very low.
